T1 - An AT&T term for a digital carrier facility used to transmit a DS-1 formatted digital signal at 1.544 megabits per second. T3 - A term for a digital carrier facility used to transmit a DS-3 formatted digital signal at 44.746 megabits per second. TCP - See: Transmission Control Protocol TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) - The basic language all computers on the Internet use to talk to each other and to send bits of information that make up Web Pages, FTP, and everything else. TCP/IP is a platform-independent standard that enables dissimilar computers, operating systems, and networks to exchange data over the Internet. (A TCP/IP Stack needs to be installed and setup to go online. Online Service software includes TCP/IP stack setup. Many Internet Service Providers use Windows 95's built-in TCP/IP stack and Dial-Up Networking client for easy setup.) TCP/IP - Protocol Suite. Transmission Control Protocol over Internet Protocol. Common shorthand which refers to the suite of transport and application protocols which runs over IP. See also: IP, ICMP, TCP, UDP, FTP, Telnet, SMTP, SNMP. Televideo Conferencing - Televideo conferencing allows computer users to talk and see each other. It's like one of the new videophones; but software and a video camera are used instead. See Video Chat. Telnet - An application for logging onto other computers to get information. Participating computers must support the telnet protocol. Telnet - Telnet is the Internet standard protocol for remote terminal connection service. It is defined in STD 8, RFC 854 and extended with options by many other RFCs. Time - Compares your PC clock time to the actual time by going onto your server. PC clock time can then be automatically corrected. Time Logs - Keeps track of time spent on-line. If charged by the length of online connection time, this can help keep costs down. Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) - An Internet Standard transport layer protocol defined in STD 7, RFC 793. It is connection-oriented and stream-oriented, as opposed to UDP. See also: connection-oriented, stream-oriented, User Datagram Protocol. Trojan Horse - A computer program which carries within itself a means to allow the creator of the program access to the system using it. See also: virus. |
